Competitive Intelligence: Fast, Cheap & Ethical
Date: Thu, May 08, 2008
Time: 7:30 am Registration & Light Refreshments 8:00 - 9:30 am Program
Location: ROOM: 3040, SFU-Surrey, 13450 102nd Ave. (Central City), Surrey

Competitive Intelligence (CI) is one of the most exciting and fastest-growing fields in business. Fast, actionable intelligence on what the competition is doing and is likely to do in the future can be the key to sustainable competitive advantage. Although CI is often portrayed in the media as "industrial espionage ", nothing could be further from the truth. The best intelligence can be acquired legally, ethically, and often from your own desk!

'Competitive Intelligence: Fast, Cheap & Ethical' is designed for the sole practitioner/entrepreneur who needs to get the most out of limited resources. By presenting specific techniques that can be done quickly and at virtually no cost, attendees will walk away from this session with several useful and thought-provoking new additions to their CI toolkits. Examples of topics to be covered include: the one-page CI reporting tool, the power of observation, sensory CI, online mystery shopping, and tapping into Internet chatter. A simple shift in our mindsets along with some specific tools tactics can allow us to harness CI in a fast, low-cost, yet completely ethical manner. This session will be invaluable to any lone practitioner who is being asked to do more with less, or any newcomer who is wondering where to start.

Objectives

o Discover specific tools and tactics to harness Competitive Intelligence quickly, cheaply and ethically
o Enhance your awareness of the less-obvious sources of Competitive Intelligence that surround us
o Boost your ability to make the most of limited resources

Predicting Project Performance in Technology Projects
Date: Tue, February 12, 2008
Time: 7:30 am Registration & Light Refreshments 8:00 - 9:30 am Program
Location: ROOM: 3040, SFU-Surrey, 13450 102nd Ave. (Central City), Surrey

Predicting project performance in high technology projects is an important challenge. It is difficult to understand how risk factors affect project performance. It is even more difficult to identify techniques for reducing the impact of these risk factors. This session will report on results from a recent research study involving three chapters of PMI members in Ohio. Our results suggest that project managers and sponsors can benefit from separating initial risk factors from risk factors that emerge as the project executes. We will show how initial risks can affect emergent risks. We will also discuss how project managers and sponsors can minimize the damage from 'forces of evil' and harness the 'forces of good' in their own projects. The session will help project managers and sponsors better understand the risks that their projects face, and to better understand how to more effectively deal with risk factors they will face in their projects.

Location: Room 3310, SFU-Surrey, 13450 102nd Ave. (Central City), Surrey, BC

Presentation by Dr. David C. Thomas, SFU School of Business

Globalization means that cross-cultural business interactions have become the norm rather than the exception. Concurrently, much organizational work is performed by teams of individuals. When teams fail to perform their jobs well - as they frequently do - because of lack of cross-cultural competence, the business is put at risk, and individual and company performance suffer. Today's manager needs to be able to better manage the cross-cultural interactions that occur in team settings.
Based on his recent book, Dr. Thomas' presentation is about learning to deal more effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds. It provides a systematic way to approach the management of multi-cultural teams. The key is to become culturally intelligent. By understanding the fundamental principles of cross-cultural interactions, practicing mindfulness, and developing adaptive behavioural skills, managers can become culturally intelligent and effective across a wide range of cross-cultural situations. Cultural intelligence is an essential attribute for managers in the globalized business environment of the 21st century.

A naturalized New Zealander, Dr. David C. Thomas received his PhD in Organizational Behaviour and International Business from the University of South Carolina. His research into the interaction of individuals from different cultures in organizational settings has led to research studies in more than a dozen countries. David previously served as a vice-president with NationsBank (now Bank of America) where his observation of cross-cultural interactions in business spawned his interest in the topic. He is currently directing an international research team in the development of a measure of 'cultural intelligence'. His previous academic postings include positions at the Pennsylvania State University and the University of Auckland, New Zealand where he also directed the Master of International Business program. He has held visiting positions at universities around the world. David is the International Business Editor for the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences and serves on a number of editorial boards.
